AI search is becoming an operating surface for brand teams. The practical question is not whether a single model response changed—it is whether the change reveals something your team can verify and improve.
What the tracking data shows
Promptwatch reports that reddit.com represented an average of 3.83% of ChatGPT Search citations from July 18 through August 7. From August 14 through August 17, that average fell to 0.52%—an 86.4% relative decline. This is a change in tracked citation share, not proof that ChatGPT stopped reading Reddit or that every type of question is affected.
The timing points to a search-behavior change
Promptwatch also observed a sharp increase in domain-specific site: searches on August 8, from 0.37% to 16.8% of its measured background queries. The average number of fanout searches per answer rose from about 1.08 to 1.83. More targeted retrieval could help explain the initial movement, but it does not fully explain the sharper break recorded on August 14.
What is still unknown
There is no public OpenAI announcement confirming a Reddit-specific ranking or citation change. Promptwatch says it cannot yet rule out a data-collection issue, and Search Engine Journal notes that a similar visibility drop in 2025 may have reflected changes in how external providers accessed Google results rather than a deliberate OpenAI policy. An individual answer that still cites Reddit is therefore compatible with either an aggregate decline or a measurement problem.
What teams should do now
Treat the report as a signal to verify, not as a reason to abandon Reddit. Establish a prompt baseline, track citation domains and answer language across repeated runs, separate direct retrieval from displayed citations where possible, and compare the movement across other answer engines. A durable content decision should follow changes in your own data, not one vendor’s aggregate chart.
